PARENTS: Acquiring knowledge about adult professions helps a child understand obligations and relationships to others. For example, a fireman fights fires; he saves people and buildings; he is a hero whom people look up to and need. Then children gradually come to realize that, for example, a father cannot be a father without a child, that teachers need students, and that doctors have patients. MY WORD: Realizing the different professions children also begin to decide that they would like to be when they grow up.

CAREABOUTKIDS

PARENTS: Cooperative social play is important for teaching children how to use objects and activities as substitutes for the real thing. When child care center children are playing "pretend" with a playmate they are practicing principles of give and take, setting goals sharing the same space, and exchanging information. Some play involving language is good for developing both communication skills and an understanding of concepts behind the words.MY WORD: Children that attend a child care center are exposed to many different learning experiences that would not be possible otherwise.
